My New Character

I said before that I wanted to do something new when I came back to Star Wars: The Old Republic. In the past I was pretty much always on the Imperial side, besides playing the stories on Republic side, so this time when making my new character I went straight to the Republic. And what better class to use a commander's token with than the only class story I haven't finished? For those who don't know, a commander's token can be redeemed to give you the option to create a character ready for the latest expansions. In this case it is a geared level 70 character just at the start of the Onslaught expansion, skipping the base game story, and the expansions up to that point in the story. So for me this was kind of a double edged sword, making a Trooper class Vanguard. I'll get to skip all the grinding and play the parts of the game I hadn't experienced yet, but I miss out on gaining Legendary Status from completing all of the base game class stories.

The New Guy

Since the last time I committed to playing SWtor this much I have started going by the username BinaryNine and streaming on Twitch, so it's super easy to name this character after my username. In universe it can easily be a call sign for the 9th member of Binary Squad or something along those lines, and since this is Star Wars, there has to be a tragic back story. He definitely has to be the sole survivor of his squad for sure. Other than that, I wanted to play him as a possible main character.

While playing my Mandalorians it always felt unnatural playing them in the game's story and expansions. They never meant to be the main character's of a Star Wars story, more of supporting characters. So this time around I thought since I'm playing a trooper and the story is so focussed on the force, what would a trooper who hung out with Jedi for too long look like? The answer is very close to a Jedi who hung out with troopers for too long, aka, Obi-Wan Kenobi's animated Clone Wars series look.

Fashion, Baybeeeeeee!

A big thing for me in MMOs is how good the dressups are, and SWtor's dressups is top tier in my books. Not only do they have a whole armour class specifically for wearing cosmetically when gearing through the game, but they have dyes for every piece of gear AND costume slots for multiple outfits!! It's the dream. One of my favourite parts of the costume mechanic is that it gives new use to the base game gear that you'd wear for a few levels before replacing it with the next piece of gear with better stats. They're often overlooked and unique looking pieces of gear too! So when I found this base game helmet that had a very nice minimalist look that matched the shoulder guards on my chosen chest piece, I couldn't not use it! All of the other helmets I was considering either had a slight texture or worn down look to them, or had just a bit too much going on with them. Speaking of the chest, the Remnant Underworld Knight's Chestguard was perfect for what I was looking for and it only took me a handful of Alliance Command Crates before I got it! It was meant to be! Being a trooper, the gear given to me upon creating the character was pretty much the coolest trooper set in the game, and the legs and boots matched my chest piece perfectly. The legs have a small plate design that match the armour plates on the chest piece's biceps, and they don't clip through the robe of the chest piece. The boots even have a similar minimalist design like the helmet. They're both the same model as the Remnant Underworld Trooper's set for reference.

The only negative I have encountered with this armour set I've made is that the armour plates on the chest piece dye the exact opposite to every other piece. Let's say I want to use a black/red dye. The plates on the chest piece will be black, however, the rest of the pieces will be red with black decals. Not only that, there's small yellow bits on the shoulder plates which do not dye. To counter this I've used white and light orange dyes on the other pieces to match the shoulder plates, hiding the fact that the chest piece isn't even dyed and the set still matches as a whole.

As of writing this the update that will add a weapon slot to the costume designer hasn't been released so I haven't decided on the weapon yet but there are a few I have bought to choose from. A green level rifle that has 3 barrels is one I really like the look of, not because of the barrels however. It has a small red dot sight on the top that I haven't seen on any other rifle in-game. The YV-23 Starforged Blaster Rifle has a simple design and also matches my armour. The Inscrutable Blaster Rifle is a really nice rifle that has a semi-realistic look but it has a window on the side that shows off your colour crystal. As someone who has colour crystals that you can't earn in-game anymore that I earnt through ranked PvP, I love being able to show off my crystal without wielding a lightsaber. The last two rifles on my list that I have been unable to buy yet are the Imperial E-1 Enforcer Blaster Rifle, and the E-1R Legion Rifle, both of which have a window to show off the colour crystal, however, the former also has decals on the side that change to match the colour crystal too! Something completely unique to any rifle in the game, to my knowledge at least. Chances are I will go with that rifle if I get my hands on it.

Combat Styles

Choosing combat styles is both easy and hard for me right now. My first one was easy peasy, I went with Vanguard and as of writing this, I have taken a liking to the Tactics specialisation.

I am indecisive about my second combat style though. Mercenary was my first class that I put effort into learning, and it has the option of healing, meaning if I picked that combat style I could possibly be a tank, damage dealer, or healer if wanted to. And then if I wanted to do that, I could either pick the Mercenary style, or Commando style, the former wielding two blaster pistols, and the latter wielding a big rotary blaster. If I were to pick the Mercenary style I would consider using two RK-6 Starforged Blasters because they look like they could be in-game equivalents of SMGs and I haven't seen anyone else do that, although I don't find myself looking at other player's blasters when I'm in combat so maybe someone has? For the Commando style, I don't know what cannon I'd use, but the style looks cool.

Another option is the Sniper combat style. I have mentioned before that I mained the Juggernaut class when I used to play, however, I have a lot of experience with the sniper class, having gone into 1v1 PvP tournaments and taking the first and second positions with another friend. So I have a lot of experience with this style too. It's mirror is the Gunslinger style and that is just the raddest sounding name of them all.

Another thing to take into account is this blog's title "/ Double Lasers." It insinuates that I play a class that uses dual blasters, namely the Mercenary and Gunslinger combat styles. So I don't know what I'll eventually pick. Maybe I'll do another blog post about that class when I do pick it, but for now I am sticking with Tactics Vanguard and learning how to do well with that one.
